We have provided some hints for our games.

Box 1

Knowing where to begin!

There are a lot of codes hidden within the exercise book. We would suggest reading the book from cover to cover first... Look behind items stapled and stuck into the journal. Complete the wordsearch. Follow the instructions in the diary.

Freeze the book

USEFUL NUMBERS

Two of these names can be read backwards to form a sentence, this then gives a clue as to what needs doing with the different numbers.

Once you know the code "two digits after 1" you need to take the digits and see what letter of the alphabet they line up to, for example 1=A, 2=B, and so on.

PAGE 1

The dates aren't just dates

Take two digits of each number/date at a time and convert these to letters in the alphabet (Again with 1=A).

PAGE 2

Upside down writing – Look out for all of the numbers on this page– this is another letter to number substitution.

The tally can be translated into a number which becomes letters too.

Pages 4-6

Pay attention to the sketches on these pages, try taking the first letter from each to form a word.

PAGES 6&8

Fold the pages 6 and 8 to combine the letters so they read vertically down.

PAGE 7

The symbols are masonic

The symbols are in pigpen code – find an alphabet online for this and try to translate it.

Page 11

Letters in red need to be read separately (297 = 2, 9 & 7), this is another number to letter substitution.

Page 12

Calculator says 'hello' – remember the font used here.

Pages 15-22

The lines on the edges of these pages form a semaphore when the pages are correctly folded.

PAGE WITH SHIELD

New code which is similar in appearance to pig pen – what could the shield symbol mean?

This is templar code – try to find an alphabet on line.

Shopping List

Play close attention to the lines on the Ts and the dots on the Is

The dots and lines create morse code find an alphabet on line to translate it

Follow the pointer in the direction indicated to reveal words.

GHASTLY MURDER

This is written in templar code, which was also used in the diary from box 1.

Reverse of the "POLICE NOTICE"

A vigenere cipher was used here, to solve this, you will need to identify the key used.

Keep hold of this, you will need it for later boxes.

Pay attention to the letters which have been circled.

Photos

One of the photos in this box has a vigenere cipher on the back of it... use the bible passage Cairncross used in the Imitation Game.

Newspaper

Look out for acrostics that may be hidden in here.

Wordsearch

Once solved the wordsearch leaves you with some unsolved letters, what do they spell?

There are several codes hidden within these newspapers... there is also a cipher within the QR code – this has been written in braille.

Should now be able to solve the seven-line rotating cipher in the back of the journal from box 1.

Page of 'R's'

Try placing the fortune fish over the image of a fish made up of the R's.

"Google no repeats"

Look for Kerry Wiseman in your exercise book from box 1, if you turn the page upside down the numbers spell google.

No repeating letters were used, giving you ten non-repeating letters to numbers.

Try placing the fortune fish over this.

Back of flyer

Uses one of the bible passages to decode the vigenere.

Look at 'John 3:16' to solve your vigenere.

BIBLE

Take note of the bible passages which are circled, these will be used as the keys for vigenere ciphers.

The letters circled in red spell out a sentence. Letters and numbers circled in blank act as they key.

FREEZE ME – When the bible is frozen numbers on the inside jacket of the bible are revealed.

Box 7

Dollar Bill

If you haven't already unwrapped your 'chocolate', when you shine the light within this on the dollar bill something will be revealed.

"Visit New York"

Could the letters on the back of this be another vigenere?

Tall Ships Race

You will need to use the flags from your "useful information" card in order to solve this.

Emails

Using the morse code alphabet found on your useful information card.

This is a one-time cipher pad... use the long psalms verse.

Vigenere

This vigenere used the passage from Acts.

Box 8

"Grant me the serenity"

'As it is written' passage used to decode the vigenere cipher.

You will need your UV light from box 7 again for this.

Box 9

Postcard

Has a vigenere on the back.

Crossword

Contains a secret message, the clue from the crossword in box 8 should help.

Circles with letters...

Use your sixpence and gold coin (from boxes 6 & 8) to see which one fits in each circle.

Box 10

Postcard

There is a string of morse code surrounding this.

Sandra's List of Names

This was double encoded using a vigenere but also with capital letters only.

Box 11

Matchbox

Try heating the matchbox, something may be revealed…

Matches – Used morse code: two matches for a dash, one for a dot.

One time cipher pad...

Uses the same bible passage as before.

"The Truth Behind..."

Look out for the letters written in bold.

Has a vigenere on the back of it.

Coded note

Use the calculator font hints from previous lock boxes.

The order the keys are used is: 3=Igloos, 4=Bozos, and 5=Hill Billies.
